Tajweed & Qira'at
This course is designed to teach students the science of Tajweed (rules of correct Quranic recitation) and introduce them to the art of Qira’at (different modes of recitation). Learners will develop accuracy in pronouncing Quranic Arabic according to the classical rules of Tajweed, and gain exposure to the rich tradition of Qira’at, starting with the most widely practiced recitation of Hafs ‘an ‘Asim before exploring other recognized styles.
1. Importance of Tajweed & Qira’at
Preserving the Quran’s pronunciation as revealed.

2. Fundamentals of Tajweed
Definition and objectives of Tajweed.

3. Makharij al-Huroof (Points of Articulation)
Learning how to correctly pronounce each Arabic letter.
Differentiating between letters with similar sounds.
Practice with isolated letters and Quranic examples.
Exercises for strengthening articulation.
4. Sifaat al-Huroof (Characteristics of Letters)
Permanent characteristics: Hams, Jahr, Shiddah, Rikhwah, etc.
Opposite characteristics and their balance in recitation.
Practical examples from the Quran.
Application drills with teacher feedback.
5. Tajweed Rules in Recitation
Noon Sakinah & Tanween rules (Izhar, Idgham, Iqlab, Ikhfa).
Meem Sakinah rules (Idgham Shafawi, Ikhfa Shafawi, Izhar Shafawi).
Madd (elongation) and its categories.
Waqf (pausing) and Ibtida’ (starting) in recitation.
Advanced rules: Qalqalah, Tafkheem & Tarqeeq.
6. Introduction to Qira’at
Overview of the 10 Qira’at and 7 Mutawatir recitations.
The most common Qira’ah: Hafs ‘an ‘Asim.
Variations in pronunciation, elongation, and word choice.
Historical preservation of Qira’at through oral chains (Sanad).
7. Practical Training in Qira’at
Mastering recitation in Hafs ‘an ‘Asim.
Introduction to Warsh ‘an Nafi’ and Qalun.
Comparison of variations across selected verses.
Listening and imitation exercises with audio references.
8. Applied Recitation Practice
Daily guided recitation with Tajweed application.
Group recitation sessions (Jama‘ah style).
Individual correction and feedback.
Memorization support for Surahs with proper Tajweed.
9. Review & Progress Evaluation
Tajweed rules test (theory + oral).
Recitation exam in Hafs ‘an ‘Asim.
Comparative reading of selected verses in two Qira’at.
